DIRECTOR Ryoo Seung-wan’s new action crime movie “I, the Executioner,” starring Hwang Jung-min and Jung Hae-in, has garnered global attention by receiving consecutive invitations to the Cannes Film Festival in May, and the Toronto International Film Festival this month.
Officially selected for the Midnight Screening section of the 77th Festival de Cannes, “I, the Executioner” made its world premiere to widespread acclaim from international media. Screen Daily praised it as “the most flawless, astonishing action since ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ – a sequel that surpasses the original,” while the South China Morning Post described it as “more intense action, more solid storytelling, and a rollercoaster experience.”
Reuters highlighted Ryoo Seung-wan as a director who promises “fresh action and relatable themes,” and The Hollywood Reporter lauded his direction as a combination of “entertaining action with sharp psychological and social exploration.” Cinemateaser noted that it is “a sequel that does not disappoint, arriving nearly 10 years after the commercially successful ‘Veteran.’”

Ryoo, who received his first invitation to Cannes in 19 years since “Crying Fist,” expressed his deep gratitude, stating, “It took 50 years to get here (Lumière Theatre). It’s truly an honor and a meaningful moment,” reflecting his lifelong dedication to film. Moreover, Cannes festival director Thierry Frémaux’s high praise that the film is “even more impressive on the big screen” heightens anticipation among prospective audiences.
Meanwhile, “I, the Executioner” was also invited to the Special Presentations section of the 49th Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from September 5 to September 15.
Ryoo was previously invited to the Gala Presentation section in 2023 with “Smugglers” and to the Vanguard section in 2015 with “Veteran.” Receiving love calls from some of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, “I, the Executioner” continues to prove its universal appeal and artistic merit, demonstrating the power of cinematic entertainment that transcends borders.
In “I, the Executioner,” Detective Seo Do-cheol (Hwang Jung-min) and his Major Crimes Investigation Division continue to tirelessly track down criminals day and night, often at the expense of their personal lives. When the murder of a professor reveals links to past cases, suspicions of a serial killer arise, plunging the country into turmoil. As Major Crimes delves into the investigation, the killer taunts them by publicly releasing a teaser online, indicating the next victim, and intensifying the chaos. To tackle the escalating threat, the team brings in idealistic rookie officer Park Sun-woo (Jung Hae-in), leading to unexpected twists as they solve the case.

NAKAKATAWA ‘yung na-bash si Barbie Forteza na dahil hindi siya nakikipag-kissing scene kay David Licauco sa ‘Pulang Araw’ ay hindi na raw mahusay na aktres si Barbie.
Sa Chika Minute report ni Nelson Canlas sa ’24 Oras Weekend’ una muna ay sumagot sina Barbie at David ng mga questions tungkol sa bawat isa.
Ani David, “Kahit sino naman ang i-partner kay Barbie magki-click, magaling siya e.”
Ayon naman kay Barbie, “Siguro kasi si David ay ano siya e, nonchalant. So katulad ngayon kahit everyone around him is praising him, hindi niya ipinapaabot sa ulo niya.
“And he’s more focused on improving his work, his craft. And nakikita mo rin sa kanya yung willingness niya.”

ANO ang masasabi ni Allen Dizon tungkol sa mga komento ng nakapanood ng ‘Guardia De Honor’ na isa ito sa best na nagawa ni Allen pagdating sa pag-arte.
Pagsang-ayon ni Allen, “Yes of course, of course! BALIK sa pagigiging kontrabida si Glydel Mercado sa Philippine adaptation ng hit Korean drama series na ‘Shining Inheritance’.
Matagal ding nagpahinga ang award-winning actress sa paggawa ng teleserye. Huli pa niyang nagawa ay ‘Artikulo 247’ noong 2022 pa.
Sa ‘Shining Inheritance’, gaganap siya bilang si Lani Vergara-Villarazon, ang madrasta na aapi kay Inna played by Kate Valdez.

Base sa women’s ranking ng World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) na nasa unang puwesto ang 37-anyos na si Gunn.
Magugunitang walang nakuhang anumang puntos sa tatlong rounds si Gunn ng makaharap ang pambato ng US, France at Lithuania sa nagdaang Paris Olympics.

Historic Philippine Patients Congress bares strategies for strengthening the patient’s voice in health policy-making and throughout the continuum of care
THE Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations (PAPO), together with the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), mounted the first-ever Philippine Patients Congress on August 29 to 30, 2024.
With the theme “Hand in Hand for Universal Health Care”, this historic event brought together 300 patient advocates, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and representatives from the government, academe, and the private sector to elevate the dialogue on patient advocacy, as well as strengthen the united call to action to deliver on the promise of Universal Health Care (UHC).
“Our organization is an institution built by different working hands,” says Karen Alparce-Villanueva, President of PAPO. “With our hands, we have the power to help, heal, serve, and support. The power of hands is the inspiration behind the key message of our Patients Congress, as we all come together, hand in hand, to elevate Universal Health Care in the Philippines.”
Advancing Universal Health Care for all
Also known as “Kalusugan Pangkalahatan” or “Health for All”, Universal Health Care (UHC) is a government mandate that aims to ensure every Filipino receives affordable and quality health benefits by providing adequate human resources, health facilities, and health financing. Despite this mandate, many patients still pay out-of-pocket for their hospital bills.
“Rest assured, I will continue to advocate for laws and reforms that prioritize patient-centered care, ensuring healthcare delivery in the Philippines is responsive, equitable, and inclusive.” This was the promise of Senator JV Ejercito during his keynote speech on the first day of the Patients Congress. As the principal author of the UHC Act, Ejercito has been pushing for amendments to the UHC Act, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Aside from its role in funding and legislation, governments also play a crucial role in building capacity so civil society can have meaningful representation and contributions to health policies, explains Ogusa Shibata, Technical Officer for Health Care Quality and Patient Safety, Maternal Child Health, and Quality Safety at the World Health Organization (WHO).
“Leaders from respective countries must set the example and pave the way to make participatory decision-making the modus operandi of the health system,” adds Shibata. “Champions are important across the health system, so we can embed social participation in the design and implementation of health policies and programs.”
Social participation covers the entire continuum of care — from involving patients in drafting health policies, developing clinical practice guidelines, and managing safety for clinical trials, to upholding pharmacovigilance and post-marketing surveillance. Shibata also highlighted the recent WHO resolution on social participation for universal healthcare, emphasizing the need for sustained political will and investment in participatory processes.
Raising the patient’s voice by mobilizing patient advocacy groups
One of the best ways to embed champions across the health system is through patient organizations. From HIV/AIDS and breast cancer,to cervical cancer and psoriasis, the patient advocacy movement has been instrumental in raising the patient’s voice and forwarding meaningful change in healthcare delivery. “We have our rights, but we also have responsibilities. Let us all do something to uplift our health system,” reminds Ms. Fatima “Girlie” Garcia-Lorenzo, one of the founders of PAPO.
Mr. Josef De Guzman, the founder and CEO of Psoriasis Philippines, emphasized the need for patient engagement in improving policy-making and raising public awareness for less-familiar diseases, such as psoriasis. Aside from firming up their mission and purpose, De Guzman also urged patient organizations to formalize their groups by registering and maintaining accurate records. In doing so, they put themselves in a better position to diversify their fund sources.
Meaningful engagement means bringing the experiences of all stakeholders into the policy development process, shares Mr. Ralph Emerson Degollacion, OIC Managing Director of Health Justice Philippines. Using a case study on raising sin taxes to fund UHC, Degollacion also highlighted the importance of data in forwarding patient advocacy.
“Policy change proposals must be data-driven and evidence-based,” he adds. “If there’s hard data, policymakers can’t just dismiss [your call to action].” Data is also key to countering misinformation and fake news in the digital age, especially regarding vaccination and clinical trials.
While quantitative data, such as cost comparisons and spending data, are crucial in policy debates, patient organizations can lend a hand in collecting meaningful qualitative data — patient experiences. They can develop, assess, and adjust their key messages to reach and convince their target audience. “Choose your messengers within your core group — you can all be good storytellers,” adds Degollacion.
Local leaders also have the power to bring their patient advocacy to the global stage, working with local and international partners to translate policies into actionable measures, reminds Dr. DurhaneWong-Rieger, President and CEO of the Canadian Organization for Rare Disorders (CORD). Local patient organizations must overcome internal conflicts, learn from each other’s experiences, coordinate their efforts, and work both inside and outside the healthcare system to achieve their common goals — improving patient safety and care.
“You have to talk to one another. Communication is probably the most important part of what [patient organizations] must do to stay together. Share problems and ways of working together. Can you work through finding solutions together?” adds Wong-Rieger.
As the first-ever Patients Congress came to a close, Mr. Christopher Muñoz, Vice President of PAPO, encouraged patient organizations to upskill to understand health systems better, identify gaps, and provide evidence-based solutions to policymakers. “You have to be strategic and learn how to play the system. Learn where your strengths and weaknesses are to move things forward,” he adds.

LUNGSOD NG MALOLOS- “Investing in local culture such as music, dance, theatre, literature, including traditional knowledge and skills, can develop creative economies, open up opportunities, and help strengthen identity and community. Ito po ay isang prayoridad sa hamon ng ating panahon.”
Ito ang mensahe ni Gobernador Daniel R. Fernando sa ginanap na Grand Opening ng Singkaban Festival sa taong ito na may temang “Pagyakap sa Kasaysayan, Pagsulong sa Kinabukasan” sa harapan ng gusali ng Kapitolyo sa lungsod na ito kahapon.
Nangako ang gobernador na mas palalawigin pa ang pagtataguyod ng pamanang kultura at pagkakaisa ng mga kabataan.
“Patuloy tayong magsisikap na palawigin ang mas masigla, maningning, at makabuluhang Singkaban. Ipagbubunyi natin ngayon, at sa lahat ng panahon ang pamana ng isang Bulakenyo. Ang ating sining, kasaysayan, kalinangan, at turismo,” dagdag pa niya.
Ayon sa Philippine Statistic Authority, umabot ang Philippine Creative Economy sa P1.72 trilyon noong 2023, na nag-ambag ng 7.1 porsiyento sa Gross Domestic Product ng bansa.
Samantala, sinabi ni Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin C. Abalos, Jr., na kinatawan ng kanyang anak na si Konsehal ng Lungsod ng Mandaluyong Charisse Marie Abalos-Vargas, na kumpiyansa ang DILG sa pamumuno ni Fernando sa pagtataguyod ng lokal na sining at kultura ng lalawigan.
“Ang inyong pong selebrasyon ay sumasalamin sa tinatahak ninyong landas na tungo sa pag-unlad na hindi isinasantabi ang kasaysayan o tradisyon,” ani Abalos.
Gayundin, nagdagdag ng kulay at saya sa kapistahan ang mga kalahok sa Marching Band Competition at Parada ng Karosa sa pagpapakita nila ng kanilang pambihirang pagtatanghal at pagkamalikhain sa mga habang binabagtas ang mga kalsada ng bakuran ng Pamahalaang Panlalawigan. Iaanunsyo ang mga nagwagi sa mga kumpetisyon kasabay ng Indakan sa Kalye 2024 sa Setyembre 14.
