US, hindi isinasara ang pinto sa posibleng FTA sa Pinas– envoy

 HINDI isinasara ng Estados Unidos ang pintuan nito para sa posibleng free trade agreement (FTA) sa Pilipinas.

Ayon kay Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez sa mga nagdaang engagements na US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, sinabi nito sa Philippine side na ang Washington DC ay “going to consider” nang tanungin kung ang FTA ay hindi na isang posibilidad.

“‘No, We’re going to consider’. So, in other words, the Trump administration is not closing the door on the FTA. So, who knows, we might be able to work something out, perhaps after the midterm in the United States,” ayon kay Romualdez.

Nauna rito, sinabi ni Finance Secretary Ralph Recto na itinutulak ng Pilipinas ang posibleng free trade deal sa Estads Unidos at sa ibang bansa.

Kasunod ito ng negosasyon sa pagitan nina US President Donald Trump at President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. noong Hulyo, inanunsyo na magpapataw ang Estados Unidos ng 19% tariff sa Philippine goods — isang rate na 1% na mas mababa kaysa sa orihinal na pigura.

Tinuran ni Romualdez na ang nasabing taripa ay “not written in stone,” sinabi pa na kamakailan lamang ay nagpadala ng liham ang Philippine side na humihiling sa Estados Unidos na gumawa ng ‘certain exemptions.’

“I think that’s being digested and being discussed right now. But, as you know, the Trump administration is doing a lot of other things, which obviously is a priority for them also. We’re just waiting,” aniya pa rin.

Maliban sa kalakalan, sinabi ni Romualdez na ang Maynila at Washington ay mahigpit na nakikipag-ugnayan sa isa’t isa para palakasin ang pamumuhunan sa bansa, kabilang ang nasa konteksto ng Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC) at defense manufacturing.

“On the economic front, there is a lot of movement in that sector. We will be able to see more of these types of investments coming not only from the private sector of the US but also from the US government,” anito.

Nauna rito, inanunsyo ng Estados Unidos ang foreign assistance package na magde-develop sa LEC, isang trilateral initiative sa pagitan ng Maynila, Tokyo, at Washington para palakasin ang investments sa high-impact infrastructure projects sa Luzon, lalo na sa Subic Bay area.

Aniya, nagpapatuloy ang pag-uusap at progreso sa planong US ammunition hub sa Subic Bay kasunod ng kaugnay na insertion sa panukalang 2026 US defense appropriation plan o National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

“Congressman [Ryan] Zinke was actually the one who inserted this in the NDAA, where the manufacturing of ammunition is being discussed,” ani Romualdez.

Sinabi pa ni Romualdez na maghahanap ang US side ng local partners sa Pilipinas para magtayo ng ammunition facility.

“[It could be] all kinds of ammunition, it can be for Howitzers, for regular ammunition for rifles… It’s a big investment, but it’s still being worked out. That just came out right now in the NDAA of the US — It’s part of the insertion,” aniya pa rin. ( Daris Jose)
