Pinas, patuloy na nakikipag-usap sa Estados Unidos ukol sa planong 100% semiconductor tariff ni Trump– Romualdez

PATULOY na nakikipag-usap ang Pilipinas sa Estados Unidos kaugnay sa plano ng administrasyong Trump na magpataw ng 100% tariff sa semiconductors at computer chips.

Nagbabala naman si Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez na ang bagong US tax policy ay makasasakit sa dalawang pinakamalaking export industries ng Pilipinas.

Nagpahayag naman ng paga-alala si Romualdez sa pagpapataw ng ‘fresh steep tariffs’ na kanyang inilarawan bilang “very disturbing” ay makaaapekto sa global semiconductor supply chain, makakaapekto sa “a lot of companies, not only here in the Philippines, but all over the Asia-Pacific region.”

“We are asking our friends also from other organizations that have been helping us…to be able to exempt this particular industry, especially those that have been established here in the Philippines for so many decades now,” ang pahayag ni Romualdez sa moderated discussion kasama ang media sa isinagawang US-ASEAN Business Council meeting sa Maynila.

Winika ni Romualdez na ang epekto sa semiconductor manufacturing industry sa Pilipinas ay “substantial” kung ang bagong ikot ng mga taripa ay matutuloy.

Ang Pilipinas ay ang ‘ninth-largest chip exporter’ ng buong mundo at ang semiconductor sector ay ang pinakamalaking export industry ng bansa.

“It’s a very substantial amount. I can just tell you that it’s very important for us to make sure that this industry is maintained here,” ang sinabi ni Romualdez sa hiwalay na panayam.

“American semiconductor manufacturer Texas Instruments, which has maintained decades-long presence in the Philippines, for example, recently made huge investments in the country, but remains “in limbo” until details on the new chip tariff are finalized,” ayon pa rin kay Romualdez.

Sa ulat, inanunsyo ni US president Donald Trump na magpapatupad siya ng 100 porsyentong taripa sa mga semiconductor na gawa sa labas ng bansa, bagama’t magkakaroon ng mga eksepsyon para sa mga kumpanyang namuhunan na sa US.

Lumabas ang balitang ito matapos ang hiwalay na anunsyo na mag-iinvest ang Apple ng $600 bilyon sa US, ngunit hindi ito ikinagulat ng mga tagasubaybay sa Amerika.

Sinabi ni Trump sa na plano niyang ihayag ang bagong taripa sa semiconductors sa loob ng susunod na linggo o higit pa, ngunit hindi siya nagbigay ng karagdagang detalye.

Kaunti rin ang impormasyon tungkol sa kung paano at kailan ipatutupad ang mga taripa, ngunit mabilis na nagbigay ng reaksiyon ang mga semiconductor powerhouse sa Asya ukol sa posibleng epekto nito.

“Manila, on the other hand, is still in the process of finalizing details on the new 19% duties imposed by the Trump administration on Filipino products entering America,” ang tinuran ni Romualdez sabay sabing hindi lahat ng US imports ay duty-free.

“The tariff on the Philippines is considered final, he said, but trade officials from Manila and Washington are “still on the negotiating stage” on the specifics and exemptions contained in the trade deal. US agricultural products are likely not included in the list of duty-free American goods,” ang sinabi ni Romualdez.
