Panukala ng NFA, mag-angkat ng 330,000MT ng bigas

PLANO ng National Food Authority (NFA) ng mag-angkat ng  mahigit sa  330,000 metric tons (MT) ng bigas para punuin ang  buffer stock  ng bansa  bilang paghahanda sa mga inaasahang kalamidad.

Sa isang kalatas, sinabi ng Presidential Communications Office (PCO) na ipinanukala ng NFA  ang importasyon ng 330,000 MT ng bigas “to cover an expected deficit in the country’s buffer stock for the relief operations of various agencies in the event of calamities this year.”

Nauna rito, sinabi ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr.,  “in good shape” ang rice supply situation sa bansa subalit ang buffer stock ng NFA sa kasalukuyan ay mababa at kailangan na i-replenish para umabot ng “least nine days worth of buffer stock.”

Sinabi ng PCO na ang panukala ng NFA na  buffer stock ng bigas  ay katumbas ng 9 na araw ng  “national consumption” mula Hulyo  2023 onwards at “will ensure sufficient volume for calamity and relief requirements from July to December this year.”

Gayunman, sinabi ni Pangulong Marcos,  na dapat na bumili ang NFA ng  buffer stock nito mula sa lokal na magsasaka.

“The NFA, given the agency’s budgetary constraints, expects its buffer stocks will decrease to less than 500,000 sacks by July 2023 —equivalent to less than a day of public consumption,” ayon sa PCO.

“The NFA may use its credit lines with the Development Bank of the Philippines and/or the Land Bank to finance the importation and provide logistics and management support,” ayon pa rin sa PCO.

Samantala, kinatisgo naman ng  Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) ang panukalang 330,000 MT rice importation ng NFA  dahil ito’y  “a great disservice to farmers and Filipinos.”

Iginiit ng nasabing grupo na  dapat na bumili ang gobyerno ng maraming bigas mula sa mga magsasaka “rather than allowing rice importers to make a killing.” (Daris Jose)
