Senate President Chiz, takot ka ba kay Sara? Tanong ng mambabatas

KINALAMPAG ni Akbayan Rep. Perci Cendaña si Senate President Chiz Escudero sa patuloy na pagkaka-delay sa pagsisimula ng impeachment trial ng senado laban kay Vice President Sara Duterte.

“Natatakot ba siya kay Sara Duterte?” pagtatanong nito.

Nagbabala rin ang mambabatas sa kawalang aksyon ng senado na posibleng makitaan bilang kalasag para sa VP mula sa kanyang pananagutan.

Si Cendaña, ay kabilang sa endorser ng first impeachment complaint na inihain sa House of Representatives.

“Hindi po ito Paris fashion week. Convening the Senate as an impeachment court is a solemn constitutional duty, not a seasonal accessory you put on or discard depending on the political weather, or one’s personal agenda. It is a uniform of duty worn whenever the Constitution demands it,” ani Cendaña.

Ayon sa pinakahuling Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, halos 9 sa 10 Pilipino ang nagnanais na direktang tumugon si VP Sara sa impeachment charges at linisin ang kanyang pangalan kaugnay sa alegasyon ng korupsyon.

Lumabas din sa survey na 68% ng respondents ang naniniwala na dapat harapin ni Duterte ang mga aksuasyon laban sa kanya, 20% ang nagsabing probably should. Taliwas naman sa 7% na naniniwala na dapat iwasan niya ang isyu.

“The public wants a trial. Even the impeached Vice President herself has signaled a willingness to face one. What’s stopping the Senate? Natatakot ba ang liderato kay Sara. The people demand transparency. Tama na po ang pateka-teka. Panahon na para magtrabaho,” giit nito.

Ibinasura rin ng Akbayan ang pahayag ni Escudero na ang impeachment complaint mula sa 19th Congress ay hindi maaaring paabutin o i-carry over sa 20th congress.

Iginiit pa nito na ang naturang argumento ay walang basehan sa konstitusyon, jurisprudence o maging sa sariling rules ng senado.

“The impeachment process is a constitutional mandate, not a legislative bill that expires at the stroke of midnight. Once the House transmitted the Articles of Impeachment, the Senate is constitutionally bound to convene as an impeachment court—no ifs, no buts. The delay, and now the flimsy excuses, only add insult to institutional injury,” pahayag ni Cendaña.

Hinamon naman ng Akbayan si Escudero na i-convene ang senado bilang impeachment court, panumpain ang mga senador bilang hukom at hayaan ang prosekusyon na basahin ang mga akusasyon.

“Every day of delay sends the message that the Senate leadership is either afraid of Vice President Duterte, or worse, actively protecting her,” pagtatapos ni Cendaña. (Vina de Guzman)
