Pinas, muling nanawagan para sa ‘total elimination’ ng nuclear weapons 

MULING nanawagan ang gobyerno ng Pilipinas para sa “total elimination” ng nuclear weapons.

Sa katunayan, hinikayat nito ang lahat ng mga estado na isantabi ang “narrow interests” at suportahan ang global disarmament.

Ang panawagan ay isinagawa sa general debate ng 3rd Session ng the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) noong April 28 sa New York City.

Sinabi ng Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) na committed ang Pilipinas sa mga layunin ng NPT na pigilan ang paglaganap ng nuclear weapons habang pino-promote ang pagtutulungan sa mapayapang paggamit ng nuclear energy.

“The Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to these objectives, highlighting that the treaty remains the cornerstone of the global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation architecture,” ayon sa DFA.

Sa kabilang dako, inihayag ni DFA Undersecretary Charles Jose ang Philippine statement sa general debate at binigyang diin ang madaliang “time-bound, phased, and verifiable program for the total elimination of nuclear weapons, and the provision of legally binding security assurances to Non-Nuclear-Weapon States.”

“Precisely because we live in a time of geopolitical instability, we must rally behind the NPT and the grand bargain it represents. The Treaty must be preserved, strengthened, and meaningfully implemented,” aniya pa rin.

Nagsalita si Usec. Jose sa ngalan ng Non-Proliferation Disarmament Initiative (NPDI), nagpahayag ng alalahanin ukol sa napaulat na pagtaas ng nuclear warheads s abuong mundo.

“Put simply, the world is now heading in the wrong direction,” ang babala nito.

Matatandaang, muling pinagtibay ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos ang posisyon ng Pilipinas na kontra sa paglaganap ng nuclear weapons, alinsunod sa national policy na may international commitments.

Sinabi ng DFA na ipagpapatuloy ng gobyerno na bigyang-diin ang kahalagahan ng ‘multilateral cooperation, dialogue, at legally binding instruments’ para makamit ang world free ng nuclear weapons.

Ang 3rd NPT PrepCom ang pinal na sesyon bago ang 2026 Review Conference, kung saan ang mga states parties sa tratago ay to the treaty in-assess ang implementasyon ng NPT.

Ang sesyon ay tatakbo mula April 28 hanggang May 9. (Daris Jose)
